This holiday season had a theme: hardcore gamers under attack. In December of 1993, the fatalities of the year's hot new game, Mortal Kombat, weren't just the talk of the local arcade. And they weren't just the topic of "Mortal Monday," the record-setting unofficial "holiday" in mid-September when the console versions of the game were released (4 million sold; biggest first week for a game ever). Sub-Zero's spine-ripping finishing techniques were also the subject of Senate hearings that resulted in a ratings system for games. But it wasn't just senators that were giving hardcore gamers grief and making games a hot topic.
